How are laser beams measured?
The correct measurement of laser beams requires a meticulous and focused approach.
It is based first of all on problem analysis. This leads to the selection of the suitable measuring instrument. Often attention is centred on laser power and focus data.
The performance of the measuring devices in relation to wavelength range, accuracy and damage thresholds must be taken into account. The laser reliability of the set-up must be examined before each measurement. This is because a special set-up is often chosen for measuring which does not meet the requirements of normal operations.
For focus measurement, in particular, the specifications of ISO 11146 must be adhered to in order to achieve reliable measurement results. This includes data on measurement ranges, filling factors and signal-to-noise ratio.
Appropriate software tools help the user to make the correct choice of parameters.
The attached presentation provides an introduction to the principles of laser beam measurement.
Special measurement problems such as time- or power-dependent phenomena sometimes demand special techniques for using the measuring devices.
We will be happy to advise you on these.
